What is llms.txt, in one paragraph

An llms.txt file is a markdown summary of your website written for large language models. It lives at /llms.txt, starts with an H1 title and a one-line summary in a blockquote, then lists your most useful pages as links with short descriptions, grouped under H2 sections. Where robots.txt says what crawlers may fetch and a sitemap lists every URL, llms.txt says which pages actually explain your business.

How to publish it

  1. Generate the draft above and edit it: fix the summary line, remove thin pages, add anything important the sitemap missed.
  2. Download it as llms.txt and upload it to your site's root so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
  3. Make sure it's served as plain text (not your HTML 404 page) and isn't blocked in robots.txt.
  4. Run the AI visibility checker to confirm it's found and valid.

FAQ

llms.txt generator questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain markdown file at the root of a website (example.com/llms.txt) that gives AI assistants a short, curated map of the site: a title, a one-line summary, and sections of links with descriptions. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024 as a companion to robots.txt and sitemap.xml.

Do ChatGPT, Claude and Google use llms.txt?

Support varies and is still evolving. Some AI tools, coding assistants and agent frameworks read llms.txt, and it costs little to publish. It doesn't replace robots.txt access, a sitemap or good on-page content, which matter more for AI search visibility today.

How does this llms.txt generator work?

It reads your homepage for the site name and summary, finds your sitemap (from robots.txt or /sitemap.xml), then reads up to about a dozen of your shallowest pages for their titles and meta descriptions. Pages marked noindex are skipped. The links are grouped into sections by their first path segment.

Where do I put the llms.txt file?

Upload it to the root of your site so it's served at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt as plain text. On WordPress, a plugin or your host's file manager can do it; on most static hosts, put it in the public folder. Then run the AI visibility checker to confirm it's found.

Should I edit the generated llms.txt?

Yes. The draft copies titles and descriptions from your pages, so review them, rewrite the summary line in your own words, drop pages that don't help an AI understand your business, and add your most important docs or guides if the sitemap missed them.

Is my site's data stored?

No. The draft is generated on request and kept in memory for about 10 minutes so a repeat request is instant. The download button sends the text in your browser back to you as a file; we don't keep it.
