How to run a Google Ads audit with this checklist
- Pick a date range. Look at the last 30 days for spend and the last 90 days for keywords and search terms, so low-volume items have enough data.
- Go area by area. Open each item's details to see why it matters. Tick it only when it's genuinely done across the whole account.
- Score it. The score weights critical items three times as heavily as nice-to-haves, so a few big gaps count more than many small ones.
- Fix in order. Start with critical open items: conversion tracking, search terms and negatives, location targeting and broken landing pages are where most wasted spend comes from.
- Repeat. Search terms, pacing and tracking drift every week. Bookmark your share link and come back, or let MegaMCP run the checks for you.
What a PPC audit should find
A good PPC audit ends with three lists: money being wasted right now (irrelevant search terms, broken pages, Display spend inside Search campaigns), data you can't trust (duplicate or missing conversions), and growth being held back (budget-limited winners, missing assets, keywords waiting to be added). This checklist is organized so each area feeds one of those lists.
FAQ
Google Ads audit checklist questions
What is a Google Ads audit?
A Google Ads audit is a structured review of an account to find wasted spend and missed opportunities. It covers account structure, conversion tracking, budgets and pacing, keywords and negatives, search terms, ads and assets, bidding, audience targeting and landing pages, and ends with a prioritized list of fixes.
What's the difference between a PPC audit and a Google Ads audit?
A PPC audit is the same review applied to any pay-per-click platform: Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising, Meta or LinkedIn. Most of this checklist applies to Microsoft Advertising as-is, because its campaigns, keywords, search terms and bidding work much the same way.
How often should I audit a Google Ads account?
Do a full audit when you take over an account and at least every quarter after that. Some checks need a much shorter loop: search terms every one to two weeks, budget pacing weekly, and conversion tracking whenever the website changes.
How is the checklist score calculated?
Each check is weighted by impact: critical items count 3, important items 2 and nice-to-haves 1. Your score is the share of the total weight you've ticked, from 0 to 100, with a letter grade. Open items are listed with the critical ones first.
Can I share my results?
Yes. After you score the checklist, copy the share link. It holds only the IDs of the items you ticked, so anyone who opens it sees the same score and checklist. Nothing about your account is stored or sent anywhere.
Can a Google Ads audit be automated?
Most of it, yes. MegaMCP connects to Google Ads and runs these checks on a schedule: wasted search terms, budget-limited campaigns, broken tracking, disapproved ads, broken final URLs. It proposes fixes as diffs you approve, and every change can be undone. Google Ads access is rolling out as Google completes its review; the sandbox ad account shows the whole loop today.
