The short answer

Use AI for Google Ads in two modes: instant read-only analysis, and changes that the AI proposes as an exact diff and a person approves. Back that with server-enforced spend caps, paused-by-default creation, undo for reversible changes and a log of who approved what. With those in place, AI can do the tedious Google Ads work without ever being the last line of defense.

What AI is genuinely good at in Google Ads

Connected to a live account through an MCP server, Claude or ChatGPT can answer questions that otherwise take a report, an export and a pivot table:

  • Finding wasted spend in the search terms report, including recurring words across many low-volume terms.
  • Explaining a change: “CPA rose 30%, which campaigns, devices and search terms drove it?”
  • Checking hygiene: disapproved ads, conversion actions that stopped recording, campaigns limited by budget, landing pages that break.
  • Drafting: responsive search ad headlines within the 30-character limit, sitelinks, negative keyword lists, a new Search campaign structure.
  • Writing the report your client reads.

Where AI is weak: knowing your margins, knowing which odd-looking query is actually your best customer, and knowing that a client told you on a call to hold spend flat. That is why the safety model matters more than the prompt.

How AI changes go wrong

FailureExampleWhat stops it
Ambiguity“Pause the weak campaigns” pauses your brand campaignA diff you read before approving
Unit mistakesA budget of 5000 meant as $50.00A spend cap the AI can't change
Stale contextThe plan was made yesterday, someone edited the campaign todayPlans that expire and re-check live values
Prompt injectionA search term or page title containing instructionsTreating platform data as untrusted, plus approval
OverreachNew ads go live untestedCreating ads, ad groups and campaigns paused
No way backA bulk change nobody recordedUndo and a change log

The safety stack, layer by layer

1. Separate reads from writes

Reads should be instant and harmless. Writes should be a different kind of tool entirely. In MegaMCP, every Google Ads write tool (google_ads_set_campaign_budget, google_ads_add_negative_keywords, google_ads_set_campaign_status and the rest) only builds a plan. Google validates it in a dry run, and nothing changes until it is approved.

2. A human approves an exact diff

A plan lists one line per change with before and after values, for example Budget for “Brand – US”: $40.00 → $55.00/day. A member, admin or owner approves or rejects it on the Changes page. Approving in chat is opt-in per workspace, limited to plans the same AI connection proposed, and never covers plans from workflows or teammates. See change approval.

3. Spend caps the AI can't edit

Budget bumpers set a maximum daily budget per campaign and a maximum percentage increase per change for each ad account. They are checked when a plan is proposed and again right before it applies. Enabling a paused campaign counts as raising its budget from zero. There is no tool that changes a cap; only admins can, in the dashboard.

4. Safe defaults

New Search campaigns, ad groups and responsive search ads are created paused. New keywords start paused unless you say otherwise. New conversion actions are secondary (not used for bidding) unless you ask for primary. Each default means a mistake costs nothing until a person flips it live.

5. Undo and expiry

Supported changes record what they need to reverse themselves: the old budget, the old status, the ID of what was created. Undo creates a reverse plan with its own diff and approval. Irreversible operations are labeled before you approve. Pending plans expire after 24 hours.

6. An audit trail

The flight recorder logs every tool call, plan, approval and undo with who did it and from which AI app. Google's own change history (readable with google_ads_change_history) shows edits made anywhere, including outside MegaMCP.

Setting it up

  1. Connect the AI app.

Add MegaMCP to Claude or ChatGPT with one URL and a browser sign-in.

  2. Connect Google Ads.

Sign in with Google in Connections. Switch off any account the AI shouldn't see.

  3. Set budget bumpers.

In Guardrails, set a maximum daily budget and a maximum increase per change for each account before you allow any write.

  4. Decide where approvals happen.

Leave approvals in the dashboard for a hard gate, or let an admin opt into approving in chat for speed.

  5. Rehearse on the sandbox.

Ask for a change on the demo account, approve it, then undo it, so everyone knows what a plan looks like.

Note. Google Ads in MegaMCP is marked Rolling out: the tools are built, and connections switch on as the platform finishes approving MegaMCP's app. The sandbox ad account works today, so you can practise the whole loop first.

Tip. Review Google's own automation settings too. If auto-apply recommendations are switched on in the account, Google may change things that no AI assistant proposed. Many advertisers prefer to review recommendations instead; google_ads_recommendations lists them and google_ads_apply_recommendation proposes applying one at a time.

Good first tasks

Start with tasks where the AI's work is easy to check and mistakes are cheap to reverse:

  1. A weekly account review: what changed, why, and what to do about it.
  2. A wasted-spend sweep that ends in a negative keyword plan you approve. Our search terms report guide walks through it.
  3. A landing page check for broken pages and redirects that drop the gclid.
  4. Month-to-date pacing with a proposed budget fix for anything far off. See budget pacing.

Before you hand over a real account, the Google Ads audit checklist is a useful baseline to compare the AI's findings against.

Example prompts

Copy these into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor with MegaMCP connected. Each lists the tools it typically calls; more are in the prompt library.

  • Reads data

Run a Google Ads health check and list findings by estimated money at stake.

    Tools it calls: ads_account_health

  • Reads data

Why did CPA rise last week? Break it down by campaign, device and search term.

    Tools it calls: google_ads_account_overviewgoogle_ads_reportgoogle_ads_search_terms

  • Proposes a change

Raise the Brand – US budget from $40 to $55 a day and show me the plan.

    Tools it calls: google_ads_set_campaign_budget

Any change becomes a plan you review and approve. Nothing moves until you do.

  • Proposes a change

Write three new responsive search ad variants for the plumbing ad group, created paused.

    Tools it calls: google_ads_adsgoogle_ads_create_rsa

Any change becomes a plan you review and approve. Nothing moves until you do.

  • Reads data

Show what changed in this account in the last 14 days, and who changed it.

    Tools it calls: google_ads_change_history

  • Reads data

Check every landing page our enabled ads use for errors and lost gclids.

    Tools it calls: ads_landing_page_qa

FAQ

Can ChatGPT or Claude run my Google Ads account?

They can do much of the analysis and draft most changes. With a server like MegaMCP, every change still needs a person's approval, and spend caps block anything above your limits.

Is it against Google's policies to use AI to manage Google Ads?

Using tools built on the Google Ads API is normal; agencies and software vendors do it every day. The tool needs Google's API access approval, and you remain responsible for what runs in your account.

What if the AI proposes a bad change?

Reject it. Nothing changes until someone approves a plan. If an approved change turns out wrong, supported changes can be undone with a reverse plan.

Do new campaigns go live immediately?

Not with MegaMCP. New Search campaigns, ad groups and ads are created paused, and new keywords start paused unless you say otherwise.

Can I limit which Google Ads accounts the AI sees?

Yes. Switch accounts on or off in Connections. Agencies can also group accounts by client so the AI only works on the active client's accounts.
